Health

stillvangogh.jpg

Hey y’all ! I’m not sure if everybody knows this about me, but I love reading and writing about health, healthy foods and natural remedies. In fact, I worked at a health food store for eight years and felt like I was getting a PhD in medicine and nutrition!

I was at a garage sale (don’t you just love those bargains!) and found the most fascinating book entitled, “Fit For Life” by Marilyn and Harvey Diamond. Being someone who is always curious and an avid reader, I thought to myself that since the price is right, why not buy the book?

This was the beginning of an answer to a prayer I prayed for God to heal me. This incredible book started showing me how what I was eating was creating problems with my health.

When I prayed and asked the Lord to heal me , immediately this thought came to mind…what if the healing I wanted was a process; would it not be nonetheless a miracle than an instantaneous healing?

One of the biggest revelations to me was what the Diamonds shared on how many people are lactose intolerant. Could that be me? I always thought when you were truly allergic to something you broke out in a rash or hives. I had been tested at the ENT for the most common allergens, but I didn’t remember being tested for dairy products.

Why would I be allergic to milk? One reason is that people can lack the enzymes to digest the milk sugars. Another is that due to the way  milk is processed, the naturally occurring enzymes are destroyed. And yet another is, because of the antibiotics and growth hormones given to the cows, we in turn are ingesting chemicals our bodies simply cannot digest. This in turn sets up an allergic response to this food group.

Not being one to take things at face value, I decided to do my own experiment. I did not drink or eat any dairy products for a whole day. And lo and behold, at the end of the day, for the first time ever in my life that I could remember, I did not have a headache! It seems the dairy was indeed an allergen and caused me to have  mucous, which in turn gave me ongoing sinus pressure and sinus infections.

Do you know what it feels like to be pain free for the first time in your life? My headaches would come and go and at times turned into migraines. I had sinus surgery, which had helped to some extent. But nothing helped as much as eliminating dairy from my diet.

A bit of wisdom I learned from one of my health food store customers is contrary to popular belief. It has been said that we are what we eat. That is partially true. The real truth is…you are what you can digest!

Look for more articles on health and healthy living! I’ve got so much to share!

God bless,

February 5  Tuesday Evening

Hi everybody! Today I want to tell you a little bit about dealing with hay fever, allergies, and sinus problems naturally.

I have had many of these problems and living here in the humid south, which just seems to be the perfect climate for growing even more mold than what is in the air due to the falling leaves of autumn.

Then in the spring, we have to deal with  pine trees which means lots of pollen. So, this post is dedicated to all my fellow sinus sufferers as well as those who are struggling with colds!

There are several products I have found which have helped me EVEN better than over the counter medications or prescription ones. One is a combination of quercetin ( a form of Vitamin C) and bromelain ( a digestive enzyme most commonly found in pineapple.)  The quercetin (QWER-sih-tin) is a bioflavonoid , which is in the Vitamin C family. Its’ function is to block the overproduction of histamines that make for watering eyes and dripping noses!

The bromelain (BROM- Elaine)(sounds like my name!) acts in a two fold approach. The bromelain is an enzyme and one of the functions of enzymes is their ability to break down and digest. The mucous in our sinuses has a protein like mass and the bromelain is a proteolytic ( a protein digesting enzyme) enzyme . I have taken bromelain for many years and have suggested it to LOTS of people. The one thing we all noticed is that is seems to work quickly at breaking up sinus pressure. Bromelain has an effective anti-inflammatory property which further reduces sinus pain and pressure. In fact, it has been widely used for reducing the pain of arthritis and sports injuries. I personally have experience helping a former health food store customer’s husband using bromelain for a sport’s injury that damaged his shoulder. He used 1500 milligrams in divided doses , finding it worked better than anything else he had tried!

From what I have read the only side effects of taking too much bromelain is that it can make your stool loose if you take more that 1500 milligrams. However, I have taken probably anywhere from 3-4,000 milligrams (in divided doses) and have NEVER had any problems with this.

What I like to do is to take about 500 milligrams of bromelain about every hour until I have some relief from sinus pressure, then continue to take maybe one or two more doses that day.

With the quercetin (which I take in a combination with the bromelain), I take several capsules which equal about 1000 milligrams per hour. Your body can tolerate about 1,000 milligrams of Vitamin C per hour and up to 10,000 milligrams daily until is saturated and therefore not digest it anymore. ( This is why people get loose stool if they take too much). The most quercetin I have ever needed to take (for sinus and cold problems is about 6,000 milligrams.

The only caution for using quercetin, is to avoid it if you have hypothyroidism. It can be suppressive to  thyroid hormone production. In this case you can purchase the bromelain by itself.

There are other ways of treating sinus and cold congestion, using herbs. One herb that has worked well for me in the herb mullein. It seems to act like bromelain, breaking up the congestion.

Fever few and nettles (sometimes it will be called stinging nettles)seem to help to dry up congestion as well.

With these herbs, you can take several capsules, several times a day. With the bromelain, you can take it in capsules or tablets.  I believe quercetin is available in capsule as well as in a liquid form. The liquid quercetin works very well when you are having extreme symptoms. One of my old customers used it after being stung by bees (which he was HIGHLY allergic to), and avoided having his throat swell up!

So, you are now armed with some weapons to fight colds, allergies and sinus symptoms! The great thing about these natural alternatives is they are not drugs, so your body will not store them in the liver or kidneys because it can’t digest them. They are in the food category, which makes them a much safer alternative than other forms of treatment.

God bless and I’ll be writing more soon!

Why Your Last Diet Failed (No I’m Not Selling A Diet Pill!)

Hey everybody! I’ve been thinking a lot about healthy living and healthy eating. And the great thing is I’ve not just thinking about it , I’ve been doing something about it. And to add more good news to already good news (now there’s a new expression), it’s been so easy and I’ve been able to lose weight without being tortured! I was telling someone last week, it should be wrong for eating right and losing weight to be this easy, when I know others are tying so hard and feeling so bad in the process!

So what’s my secret??? I’ll tell you! My experiment with eating right and trying to not have food cravings began with my drawing upon my knowledge of nutrition.

The foundational basis for healthy eating is that the food must have nutritional content. I know this sounds so elementary, but follow where I’m going. Most everybody knows about the most basic components of a truly nutritious food, being one that has vitamins and minerals, amino acids and throw some essential fatty acids in for good measure. However there is something missing here. It’s what’s missing that makes  all the difference!

So without further adieu, here is where peoples’ diets fail, and they won’t tell you at Weight Watchers or Jenny Craig. They are missing ENZYMES! What ? ENZYMES! I know you are just beside yourself with questions. I would be!

One of the principles of natural medicine is that you are what you DIGEST. Just because you eat a food and don’t get a stomach ache doesn’t mean you digested it properly.

What do enzymes do? The way it was explained to me is that they are like the spark plugs that make your car’s engine start. You can have the most expensive car with the biggest engine, but if you don’t have the spark plugs to fire up those sparks , the engine won’t work.

At the store I used to work at, we had a training class by a company that ONLY manufactures enzymes. I was amazed at what I learned . I’m not sure if scientist even know how many enzymes and types of enzymes the human body has.

One of the biggest trends in the supplement industry is with enzymes. Enzyme deficiencies can cause a host of food allergies, as well as inflammation.Inflammation doesn’t just occur in the joints of those suffering with arthritis. It can occur in any part of the body and where it is present, there will be a name of a disease given to it. For example, when inflammation is present in the muscles, it is called fibromyalgia.

I think you can see how important those tiny little enzymes are!

So, how do we get enzymes? You can purchase digestive enzymes, but anything man made doesn’t have the added benefit of the nutrition that goes along with it. Plus, there are new scientific discoveries made all the time of something great and wonderful that is in our food! Man has yet to exhaust them all!

So, back to weight loss. This is what works for me, and how I discovered it.

I was first introduced to the benefits of enzymes by some people I knew who juiced. The reasoning behind juicing is to not only get a concentrated source of nutrition your body could easily digest, but also to get the ENZYMES! I was astounded at the energy and the natural high that juicing gives!

So, I decided what was missing in my diet could be enzymes and the way to get them naturally is to eat more unprocessed (raw) foods. What I did was to try to eat my meals with as much raw foods as possible, thus getting the nutrition that these foods give and the additional benefit of greater absorption of the foods due to the enzymes.

For example: for breakfast, I would start by drinking water with freshly  squeezed lemon in it. If you take large gulps and not small sips, your body will not make enough enzymes to digest the foods. Then I would eat an apple with peanut butter. Usually two apples. The fiber from the apple will also help to fill you up.

In between meals, I am constantly drinking water with lemon. The lemon has one of the most complex nutritional profiles of anything I’ve ever seen.

For lunch , I would eat a sandwich with some kind of salad and if I feel like I am really hungry I will eat several bowls of salad (watch the salad dressing and don’t pile it on!) or eat some kind of raw food like several stalks of celery or carrot sticks. My strategy is to concentrate on trying to eat about 50 -75 percent of what I am eating as raw. It’s not as hard as it seems.

For snacks, I do nuts, fruit, celery , any kind of raw foods. I also like to take alfalfa tablets at the end of each meal, because they have so many minerals and trace minerals that balance the blood sugar.

Dinner is a repeat of this regimen. Eat as much raw food as possible and then  eat protein. I don’t eat a lot of carbohydrates such as breads, because to be honest, I am not craving them and I’m getting carbohydrates from the fruits and vegetables (mostly fruits.)

As I have made it my goal to eat as much raw food as possible, and to drink the water with lemon (providing lots of nutrition and ENZYMES) in between, I haven’t to battle with food cravings and blood sugar spikes.

I have been treating my body like a car that needs the proper fuel. And my body is responding by giving me more energy and better performance!

I can now wake up in the morning and feel good, even if I haven’t gotten as much sleep as I really need and not feel exhausted.

The most energy your body must expend to do any work is in digesting food! The easiest foods there are to digest, which require the least amount of processing are raw foods!

Well, I hope this blurb on enzymes will help you understand some principles of nutrition that you can use to work for you!

And just remember you can do ALL things through Christ who gives strength to YOU!

If I can do this, anyone can. I used to have a sweet tooth the size of the Grand Canyon!

What I have discovered with myself and with others I have observed, is that when there is something missing in your diet, you will be out of balance and have food cravings.

Farmers and veterinarians call this cribbing or pica, when an animal does this. Have you ever heard of a horse chewing on rubber tires or eating the paint off of wood? OR how about when pregnant women want to eat dirt? Strange , but true! Most of the time, it’s minerals or trace which are missing!

God bless you !

I’m praying for you~

Elaine

A Younger, Thinner YOU!

Dear Friends,

Do you ever have one of those God inspired moments; you know,

the one where you feel the light bulb is glowing over your head

because you get a revelation to a problem you’ve been pondering

over?

Several months ago, I was flipping the TV station and something

caught my attention. The guest speaker was talking about the

link between weight loss and aging. Nothing new? But wait until

you hear what this brilliant man discovered!

He discovered that we can lose weight by balancing 4 major chemicals

in our brain, and that each deficient brain chemical =food addiction and

CRAVINGS!

The next major point was that the same chemicals that control the brain

control the aging process and that the aging process CAN be reversed!

Dr. Eric Braverman tells us that the brain can be rebalanced with

the right kind of eating and if need be, with nutritional supplementation.

He was interviewed on line at  www.SidRoth.Org this week. Go and

check him out and see what you think!

Tomorrow we will talk about the simple steps he advises for you

to take NOW so that you can get your life and weight under control!

  1. HI Elaine,
I look forward to reading more articles on health! I also have read on herbal treatments for many years…which greatly trained my “medical trained” brain, but using herbs has brought much healing into our family as well, for a variety of ailments.

  3. Elaine,
This is the stuff here that really interests me. I believe that through God and His Gifts we can renew our Bodies just as we renew our minds through his word. As it all began God tells us in Genesis 1:29 Then God Said, “I give you every seed bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds of the air and all creatures that move on the ground – everything that has breath of life in it – I give every green plant for food,” and it was SO!

With that I look forward to conversations and study in this area. We know that all things happen for the good of those who Love Him. I see the love for Him in you and it is a pleasure to have met you!

I am so impressed by the amount of information here in your site… and all done in Faith.

My prayers are with you and …

  28. Whey Protein is a high quality Complete Protein containing all of the essential amino acids………………………………….

Hey Leonard-yes, it can be a good thing if it is a high quality formula.
The folks I know who have studied nutrition like crazy all prefer the protein from goat milk, and so do I.
Whey is a by product and it doesn’t contain the highest quality of protein.
I like to get my protein from food, as this is the least processed form of food available.
Another thing about the whey protein is that it is often not from organic milk and I am really not a food snob at all, but I am really careful with drinking and eating milk products that are not organic due to the way the animals are fed and treated.
Okay, so to each his own-I just don’t want a highly concentrated form of food that has by products in it that are not all that great for you in my opinion and others that have studied AND studied this.
I like Dr. Mercola, and I bet he thinks the same way!
    Thanks for the comment!

  29. Your blog is very beautiful, can you tell me how to make……………………………………………

Thank you so much for those kind words-but it is not something I made.
My blog was installed using a WordPress theme. It’s called “Peaceful Rush”. It is
free and you can probably still go to the Word Press site and install it.
I found other free clip art on the Internet to install-and that’s it!
