SEWING and arts and crafts!

I so strongly believe that sewing is the remedy to our ADD, technology and mass marketed overload.
Hey, you have no excuse to put off creating and crafting anymore. Why? Have you ever heard of the glue gun and fabric glue? I love to sew, but I will never turn up my nose at a shortcut.

Using JELLO for Fabric Dye? Oh Yeah! Here’s the Tutorial!
(I’m using these to make some Valentine’s Day gifts!)

I wanted you to see what great detail you
could get for drawing using a CRAYON!
2. It will also make these!

These scarves are a beautiful shade of pink, in the offline world!
My Kodak Easy Share could not pick up the color
like a high resolution camera. The fabric was white
and you can tell in person, the pink shade
turned out beautifully!
3. And even this can be made from a Jello dye and crayon!
This fabric turned out even darker than the scarves.
You can clearly see that the crayon kept the color-
even after the rinsing with warm water and vinegar!
**What you’ll need**:
1. Jello-dissolved in hot water-follow directions.
I used some that had expired-yes, I know it’s hard to
believe it expires-but the box said so-so I guess it was!
I used 3 boxes of a red colored Jello and some that was orange-
and added enough water for what the package says two boxes
should have.
2. Plastic gloves (So your hands won’t turn funny colors!)
3. Discarded, upcylced, recycled, re-purposed fabric.
I used an old linen table cloth that was worn out and stained
in places. I also used old pieces of a sheet. Natural fabrics will
retain colors better. *NOTE* I used PART of a table cloth. I think
a full sized table cloth would need more water AND Jello to make
the dye bath.
My creations never really got that dark-they turned light shades
of pink-just in time for the making of some Valentine’s gifts.
4. White vinegar to set the dye and help it stay in the fabric!
5. A niece, nephew, child, (some husbands might qualify), basically
anyone that wants to be creative will make this more fun!
6. Crayons or a crayon if you want to design your fabric. My niece,
Olivia was the one who came up with this idea! Thanks, Olivia!
The crayon will leave the color behind and create a pattern- I don’t
know how come it stays in the fabric-BUT IT DOES!!
7. Old clothes to wear so you won’t stain your nice ones!
8. A wooden spoon to kind of stir the fabric in the mixture.
9. An over-sized pot or pan, like what you use to make a
whole bunch of soup.
10. White vinegar to set the dye and keep fabric from bleeding.
11. A bowl to put the fabric in when you get done dying it- you
will use with the vinegar. ( Do NOT use plastic- plastic stains! Any
other kind is fine! After all this is all food grade and non toxic!)
**Directions**
1. Prepare the Jello.
2. Place the item(s) in the dissolved Jello.
*NOTE* If you are going to write names on the fabric
with crayons- do it before you dye it. You can also draw
patterns and designs-but it works best if you use an embroidery
hoop to stretch out the fabric.( I LOVED drawing on the fabric!
Okay, it’s official, I’m a big kid!!! And so are you, no doubt if
you’re reading this!)
3. Put dyed items in another container, like a glass or metal
bowl (not plastic).
4. Pour several tablespoons of the vinegar over the items.
5. I used probably about half a cup of vinegar for several
scarves and a few small pieces of old sheets.
6. Then rinse the items in water that is warm, not hot.
7. The longer you rinse, the lighter the fabric will be, but the
less it will bleed when washed.
8. I am using some of the items for decorative projects, where no
washing will ever occur.
9. The scarves, I rinsed for several minutes with a slow stream
of warm water. These scarves will be getting HAND WASHED!
10.Okay, that should be it. You’ve just done an eco-friendly, kid
friendly, and even budget friendly FAST, FUN project! How many
times can we crafters cover all those bases?!
Just remember that the Jello can stain, so be careful when you
dry the fabric, drying outside on a clothes line would be ideal.
Since I did mine in the dead of winter, I dried over the towel
rack in the bathroom.
I smoothed the fabric out for the home dec fabrics.
The scarf fabric was different. I wanted it to have more
of a gauzy texture, so I rung it out and twisted it.
I put the two ends together and twisted it like a rope and
let it dry that way.
In fact, this was a no sew project. I cut the scarf using the hem
that was already there on the bottoms edges (as it was a table
cloth). The other edges I left with a soft fray.
I think that is it!
Just remember-if it stains- you can dye fabric with it!
When we were doing this project, my niece did a pillow
case and used mustard that comes in the squirt type bottle!
Oh, wow! It stayed in the fabric.
I want to go and see if I can design a tee shirt doing this!
But that like Scarlet say, Fiddle dee -dee is for another day!

**How To Use Your Dyed Fabrics**:
1. Use in any kind of decorative project where you won’t be
washing the fabric but displaying it!
2. Scrapbooks.
3. Pillows would give you lots of designing bang for the
buck. Whether large 0r small-your imagination is the limit!
4. Sachets.
5. Accessories like scarves, headbands and belts.
6. As framed creations, bearing names of individuals
or as sayings and quotes!
The sky is the limit! Go get your Jello and crayons y’all!

SUPER FAST& CHEAP BAG AND FLOOR MAT TIPS!
(Subtitled-what can you make for 3 dollars that
looks like a million?)
Can you believe that January is almost over!
I wanted to encourage all of you lovers of BAGS and PURSES!
Why is it that I have a need to make them-no matter how many
I have made? Oh, such is the nature of the sewer/crafter/creative
soul!
I wanted to share some super quick, sew it fast, and sew if cheap
tips!
1. If you can find any sale table cloths at either garage sales, or at stores
like Home Goods, Target etc. buy them! Solids are probably most versatile,
but never discount how amazing printed fabrics can be for linings and
other projects!
Several of my favorite bags I’ve ever made, were made even better and
faster through the using of these table cloths . I found a gorgeous, tan
linen one at an end of the season sale for 3 dollars!
I have used those lovely, neatly done hems to line up to the top of the
bag, eliminating the need to sew down the lining. It helps save time!
The red heart purse was a sheer fabric with the hearts done in a velvety
type texture.I used the tan fabric underneath as the lining and the linen
was oh so accommodating , adding shape to the fabric!
Another use that was ever so wonderful for the linen table cloth was
for a shoulder/messenger bag. I had JUST enough creamy/red toile
fabric to cut a panel on top of the front of one side.
2. Hit the remnant table and found a yard of the heart fabric as well
as a yard of the toile for a dollar each!
Okay, here is one of my favorite things EVER! I read on my favorite
sewing site, SewMamaSew.com, about using old bath sized towels as
a backing for a floor cloth/bathmat/kitchen mat. The cover can be
anything you choose-I believe the original post showed a lovely series
of long woven patches-much like a patio/pool chair!

Alright, y’all I used that idea to make the following-but I did not have
a lot of fabric, so I used this idea from a tutorial on making a quick

It’s got various random scrap pieces that are sewed directly sewn on top
of the quilt. I don’t want to violate any copyrights etc. so click the link
and you can see where I got my inspiration!
 
Okay, I’m wishing I had an expensive camera to get all the details,
but I think you can get the idea y’all!
I used the remainder of the table cloth to make this bath mat as
a fun Christmas present! I love the cute frogs on the lily pads-and
so did my Mom! Her bathroom is these colors. The more the mat
is washed, the softer it will get like the raggy quilts. Never heard

3. So here is my rule number two for quick, fast sewing-use what you’ve got
and don’t be afraid of doing something unconventional.
For the handles of the purse my niece and I worked on, I had some
lovely satin ribbon. I would never have used it normally to make
a bag because it seems like it would be too flimsy. But, given
the nature of the lightweight fabric, I say give it a try!
I warned my niece not to put real heavy stuff in it! And hey,
it works.
I even used old belts to make handles for purses- it’s fun to
scout around in the thrift store, or even your basement (and
mine looks a lot like a thrift store, anyway…) Just use your
imagination!
The zebra purse was made from some old upholstery fabric I
found on sale and knew I’d find a use for one day! It costs
more than the other two fabrics, but sometimes you have to
splurge and considering how many things I’ve made from it,
I just know it was an economical find!
So here’s the recap-
Sewing is much like cooking! You can use what you’ve got and make
it up as you go. The more things you try, the more you will find what
works and doesn’t work.
The more you stock in your pantry (fabric stash/accessories stash), the
more choices you will have!
Just like you don’t have to always pay full price for food and grocery
items, you don’t have to max out your budget indulging your need and
desire to sew and be crafty!
Just keep your eyes open and know that you can make amazing things
with the unique, God given talents you have!
That is what makes sewing artistic, don’t you think?!

Hi there-this is how to do it:
Go to home page.
Click on orange button that has RSS.
It will ask you how you want to read it.
You can choose how you view it-for example you could chose Google.
That is what I would use, as I have Google as one of my emails.
It will subscribe you when you place your email in the box.
You will then receive it in your email and Google, for ex. has a wonderful
option that lets you put all your many blogs in one location in your account.
Google READER is the option that you will see in your Google account.
I believe that all other email accounts have this option as well.

Where? So much of what is on that sewing page represents years of doing sewing and craft projects. I am like the artists who goes to galleries and sketches what they see. I go to magazines, stores, websites-any place is great for inspiration. That sparks an idea and then I create things. I hope that answered your question. I am one of those curious people who just love to make things and re-do. I am like a scientist-only I use fabric and craft supplies-I am always experimenting!
